Settlement Day

Tips

READ EVERYTHING! Pay particular attention to the loan documents that outline your interest rate and terms of the loan.

If there is a problem with the documents, do not hesitate to refuse to settle until it is corrected. You are obligated to the terms of the documents once you sign, so be sure they are right.

Go on a pre-settlement walk-through of the house, if allowed by the contract. The house should be in substantially the same condition as when you bought it, with the same appliances in working order and it should be cleaned, if that was what your contract called for. Also, you will want to check any repairs that the seller was supposed to make before settlement. If issues come up, ask for the escrow agent's help in resolving them.

Go to settlement, sign your documents and celebrate. Congratulations! You are a homeowner!
