Weeki Wachee waterfront is the best kept secret in Florida. No kidding! This neighborhood of waterfront properties is small and hidden away, off the beaten path, yet very close to all of your modern conveniences AND an easy commute to Tampa. It's still under-developed and very, very, peaceful. Lot of trees and wildlife all around you.
Frankly, I'm quite surprised that the Northerners haven't scooped up ALL the great properties in this old Florida style neighborhood. All these houses are built on waterways leading to the fresh water, clear blue Weeki Wachee River, and out to the Gulf of Mexico.
Here on the west coast of Florida, the sunsets are unbelievable, absolutely gorgeous. And I KNOW, because I have lived and experienced Long Island sunsets, Jacksonville, FL sunsets and California sunsets. You just can't beat these Weeeki Wachee sunsets!! (ok, maybe Hawaii, but I haven't been there yet).
Rogers Park, a small beach on the River with picnic tables, barbeques, volleyball nets, swimming and a boat launch is right around the corner, within walking (or boating) distance.
Pine Island, another small beach with the same amenities and also a children's playground, is literally a 5 minute drive. (An awesome place to go watch the sunset).
And WILDLIFE! The birds around here are extra-ordinary! I have been living here for 7 years and I still run for my camera every chance I get. Some of these birds are so big they remind me of the prehistoric birds from one of those old Japanese movies! The ducks and birds feel very comfortable walking right on our lawn and into the yard, until our dogs bark and chase them away (great photo opportunity). We even have a resident Hawk that we see all the time, "Hawkeye". I actually saw two of them mating perched up on a tree stump right outside our front door!! I'm serious! Too bad I didn't get a picture of that one for National Geographic.
As far as wildlife goes, I'VE SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST. So I'm a northern girl (born and raised on Long Island). Until I moved to Florida I never heard of a manatee. Well, now I see them swimming right in our canal! (got pics) You have to pay big bucks to go "swim with the manatees" at a Florida tourist attraction. Not if you live in Weeki Wachee! There's a deep lagoon right around the bend called Hospital Hole. Divers actually go there to hone their skills. Anyway, we were on our boat one day, it was another one of these gorgeous sunny Florida days on the water, and we were coming around the bend when we saw a bunch of swimmers all gathered in one area. When we got closer, we saw that there were two manatees frolicking with them, allowing the swimmers to pet them on their heads and snouts, rub there bellies and swim with them. I was flabber-gasted! So what did we do? We jumped right in and joined in on the fun. So yes, now I can say, this Long Island girl has swam with the manatees!
