The original 3 story home with full English basement, 6 foot doorways and hand hewn timbers was built with a northern front in 1750 on the banks of the Appomattox River; upon the Appomattock Indian hunting grounds which at that time was the American frontier. Numerous Indian artifacts have been found and are still buried on the property. Jacob Woodson (1748-1839) Obadiah s youngest son; Magistrate of Prince Edward County appointed Captain of the Virginia Militia in 1780 by Governor Thomas Jefferson was the second owner. In 1815 put an addition on the house consisting of a full basement, living room, second floor bathroom and master bedroom changing the house to an eastern front and adding the porch with 18 foot columns. Jacob and his wife Elizabeth both lived at Happy Valley until their 91st year and are buried in the Woodson s cemetery on the property. The third occupants were Jacob and Elizabeth s youngest daughter and her husband Dr Charles Silas (Bigelow) Morton a confederate doctor in the civil war, who changed his name to Morton his mother-in-laws maiden name because he thought Bigelow too northern. After the civil war Dr. Morton Traded properties with the Fords from Pamplin City ( involved in clay pipe making in Pamplin City) thinking it a better place for his medical practice. The property was divided between two Ford sons and in 1943 the aging Ford sold the estate to a wealthy absentee landlord Hans Vaness Allen an author, pilot, and Okalahoma oil baron. The neglected property was purchased from the Van Allen estate by the current owners who have been continuously renovating and restoring it for the past twenty two years.
