is the only incorporated city of Del Norte County, California and serves as the county seat. It is named for the crescent-shaped stretch of sandy beach south of the city. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,006, not including the 3,300 prisoners at Pelican Bay State Prison. Crescent City is also the site of the headquarters of Redwood National Park.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.3 km²), of which, 1.8 square miles (4.6 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²) of it is water. The total area is 13.59% water.
The mouth of Elk Creek, where it flows into the Pacific Ocean, is in Crescent City.
