According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 27.3 square miles (70.7 km²), of which, 27.2 square miles (70.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.29%) is water.Le Comte de Rochambeau, Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, marched through and camped in the town during the American Revolutionary War on his way from landing at Narragansett Bay to join George Washington's forces on the Hudson River in 1781.
