is a city in Hancock County, Kentucky, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 971 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Owensboro, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the county seat of Hancock County.
Incorporated in 1836, the city is named for Richard Hawes, who owned the land the city now occupies.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km²), all of it land.
