is a city in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 21,842 at the 2000 census. Before incorporating as a city, it was known as
. The township was organized on December 30, 1837, the second to be organized in Kent County, and initially comprised all of the land in the county north of the Grand River.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.4 square miles (65.9 km²), of which, 25.2 square miles (65.2 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²) of it (1.10%) is water.
