is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 810 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Carlton County.
Minnesota State Highways 45 and 210 are two of the main arterial routes in the community.
The Thomson Reservoir and Dam, and Jay Cooke State Park are nearby; and the Willard Munger Bicycle Trail runs through the city.
In 1870 the Northern Pacific Railroad decided to finish a stretch of track that would link Duluth to St. Paul. Temporary shacks were erected for the workmen at the place that was soon know as "Northern Pacific Junction". In 1881 this settlement was incorporated as "Carlton". It takes its name from State Senator Ruben Carlton.
