The city of Champlin is located along the Mississippi River, surrounded by the cities of Anoka, Dayton, Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove and Coon Rapids, about northwest of Minneapolis. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.8 square miles (22.8 km²), of which, 8.2 square miles (21.2 km²) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²) of it (7.05%) is water. The average elevation is above sea level and the Mississippi River is approximately one-eighth of a mile wide throughout Champlin.
