Itasca State Park, the source of the Mississippi River welcomes almost half a million visitors every year. The population of was 3,276 at the 2000 census.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.1 square miles (15.8 km²), of which, 6.0 square miles (15.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (1.64%) is water. The Fish Hook River flows through the city.
