is a city in, and county seat of, Williams County, North Dakota, USA. The population was 12,512 at the 2000 census. Williston was founded in 1887 and named for Daniel Willis James, a board member of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company by his friend, the owner of the railroad, James J. Hill.
