is a town in Ulster County, New York, USA. The population was 19,868 at the 2000 census. The
contains the Village of Saugerties. The town is in the northeast corner of Ulster County.
U.S. Route 9W and the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) pass through the east side of the town.
The land was purchased in 1677 from the Esopus tribe by the Dutch settlers and Land Grants were made in the following years. In 1710, there was a large influx of German Palatines, from the Rhineland-Palatinate region.
Saugerties was the home of the Woodstock '94 music festival, held on the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock Festival. Saugerties is just 10 miles east of the town of Woodstock, New York. The original festival was held some 70 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock (on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York), while the 1999 festival in Rome, NY was 160 miles away from Woodstock.
