Local city information for Otis, OR

Otis is an unincorporated community located in the northernmost portion of Lincoln County, Oregon, United States on Oregon Route 18. It is believed that this community was named for major-general Elwell Stephen Otis (1838-1909), who was the one-time military governor of the Philippines.

The post office was established on April 24, 1900 with the current name. Currently Otis, located about east of the junction of U.S. Route 101 along Oregon Route 18, consists of the Otis Cafe (a former tavern), the post office, a gas station with a mini-mart, a corn dog stand, a drive through espresso stand and an all-purpose building. There are no houses in Otis but there are about 1500 homes in the surrounding hills, served by the post office. The Salmon River flows close by.

The 190 acres (770,000 m²) the community is located on was bought in 1910 for $5,000 by the grandfather of the current owner, Vivian Lematta, who has not lived full time in Otis since 1957 and presently resides in Maryland. Only three acres (12,000 m²) is zoned for commercial development; the rest is restricted to timber or agricultural use and is currently used for grazing of horses and/or cattle. Lematta has put the land up for sale twice, once in 1999 when the Today Show considered featuring it in an episode, and then again in 2004. The price of the 190 acres (770,000 m²) is set at $3,000,000.00.
