is a borough surrounded by Cambria Township, located in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, 16 miles (26 km) west of Altoona. It is situated in the Alleghenies about 2025 feet (617 m) above sea level. Ebensburg is located in a rich bituminous coal region. In the past, saw mills, tanneries, wool mills, a foundry, etc., operated there. The number of residents in 1900 was 1,574, and in 1910, 1,978. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The population was 3,091 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cambria County.
Ebensburg originated in November of 1796, when Rhees Lloyd came to settle there with 20 men. Lloyd offered land to the government in exchange for Ebensburg becoming the county seat, which the government accepted.
In the borough of Ebensburg, there are 3 public schools, and 2 private schools. Central Cambria High School, Central Cambria Middle School, and Cambria Elementary, 3 of the 4 schools of the Central Cambria School District, are located in the borough. As well as, Bishop Carrol High School and Holy Name Elementary School. The fourth school, Jackson Elementary, is located about 5 miles west of the borough, down Route 22.
