is a location, better described as a hamlet, on St. Helena Island in unincorporated Beaufort County, South Carolina. It is located along United States Route 21. Halfway between the picturesque Low Country city of Beaufort, South Carolina and the unspoiled state park at Hunting Island State Park, the Frogmore area is primarily rural yet has easy access to the coast and amenities of the city of Beaufort. The Beaufort airport is approximately three miles from Frogmore, but commercial aircraft land at Savannah-Hilton Head or Charleston airports, which are just over one hour's drive from Frogmore. Fripp Island is just past Hunting Island approximately a fifteen minute drive from the Frogmore area, continuing out Route 21 until its end at the Atlantic.
Near to Frogmore are the coastal communities of Harbor Island (near Hunting Island State Park) and Freeport, which rests along the Broad River. Residents and tourists to Fripp Island, Harbor Island, Hunting Island, and Freeport often stop in Frogmore, which has a traditional Gullah restaurant, several art galleries featuring Low Country art, and an assortment of gift shops showcasing local arts and crafts.
Frogmore is the nearest town to Penn School Historic District, locally known as Penn Center, a National Historic Landmark. Penn is one of the best places to learn about the early years of life for residents in the Low Country during the pre- and post-Civil War years. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. studied and lectured at Penn Center the formative years of his career as a civil rights leader. The museum at Penn Center is the nearest cultural attraction at Frogmore and attracts tourists worldwide who are interested in learning more about this region of the coastal Southeastern United States.
According to the South Carolina Encyclopedia, "Frogmore Stew" originated in the Frogmore community. The stew is a favorite throughout the Low Country of coastal South Carolina. Sometimes called "Beaufort Stew," the dish is a seasoned mixture of fresh local shrimp, yellow corn on the cob, sausage and potatoes. It represents the essential simplicity of Low Country cuisine.
Frogmore is also the name of a plantation that has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The plantation is not in the area called Frogmore on St. Helena Island, but is located on nearby Edisto Island.
