is a city and the seat of Montgomery County in the U.S. state of Texas within the metropolitan area. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 36,811 (though a 2004 estimate placed the population at 43,402). The number of residential building permits issued per year has doubled in the last three years as the region has gone from a sleepy town north of Houston to a booming Houston suburb.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 37.9 square miles (98.1 km²), of which, 37.8 square miles (97.9 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.21%) is water.
