is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,754 at the 2000 census. The town is named from a ranch in that area named "Rancho Viejo" or old ranch. This ranch was owned by Blas Maria de la Garza Falcón, whose name was given to a nearby dam, Falcon Dam.
Rio Hondo is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.3 square miles (5.9 km²), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.5 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (7.05%) is water.
