is a city in Chittenden County, Vermont, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 15,814. It is one of the anchors of the Burlington-South Burlington metropolitan area.
It is composed of multiple sets of suburban neighborhoods and a commercial center, which is in the process of being converted to a downtown . It is also home to the state's largest mall, the University Mall. The city borders Lake Champlain and has a public park and beach, "Red Rocks".
The area of South Burlington was first granted by New Hampshire as part of Burlington township on June 7, 1763. The town of Burlington was organized around 1785. In 1865, the unincorporated village of Burlington was chartered as a city. The remaining area of the town was then organized as a separate town with the name South Burlington. The town of South Burlington was later also incorporated as a city in 1971.
