Living in Conshohocken: Philadelphia Neighborhood Guide

While some people enjoy living in the heart of a city and walking distance to all the amenities and nightlife, others want to be close to a major metropolis but also have the benefits of suburb living. For those people, living in Conshohocken has a lot to offer. Nicknamed Conshy by locals, this Philadelphia suburb was founded in 1850 and consists of just one square mile of land, about 13 miles to the northwest of Philly, according to the Conshohocken Historical Survey.

The Market

Conshy is a relatively small town, with 7,895 residents, but offers a variety of housing options. Just before incorporation in 1833, Conshy boasted just six houses, according to the Conshohocken Historical Survey. Today, there are 3,579 houses per square mile. Those homes include a mix of high-rise condos, townhouses and twins and single-family residences. Styles range from Bungalow, Craftsman and Colonial Revival, the survey notes.

The average home in the borough sells for $316,144, about $192 per square foot. Homes in Conshy often sell for less than what they’re listed for, with the average home in the area selling for $3,818 less than the listing price.

The Lifestyle

Although Philly is just a short train ride or drive away, people living in Conshy don’t have to make the trek to the city to have an enjoyable night out. The town has plenty of restaurants to choose from, including Bar Lucca, with traditional Italian, and Coyote Crossing, which serves Mexican cuisine. Conshohocken Brewing Company is a town highlight and offers a rotating selection of beers brewed in-house and a pub menu.

The waterfront area in Conshy is a popular destination for cyclists, runners and hikers. The Schuylkill River Trail runs along the river, stretching down to Philadelphia and up to Phoenixville and Valley Forge. Near the trail, there’s a beer garden that operates in the spring, early summer and again in the early fall. The beer garden serves food, has several games such as ping-pong and bean-bag toss and offers live music on a regular basis.

The downtown area houses several unique shops, such as the Edwards Freeman Nut Company, an old-fashioned candy story. There’s also Riverbend Cycles, which fixes and sells bikes and rents them to people who want to spend a day on the trails. The bike shop also has a cafe that serves coffee, sandwiches and pastries.

An annual highlight in the borough is the Conshohocken Funfest, which started in 1993 and brings residents, businesses and local artists together for one day. The festival stretches for six blocks in the heart of the of downtown area. Along with vendors, children’s activities and live music, the festival includes a 5K race.

Getting Around Town

Conshy’s location makes it easy to go to and from. The area is served by two SEPTA regional rail stations, Conshohocken and Spring Mill. The Schuylkill River Trail also offers a viable commuting option for people looking to bike into the city for work. Those who prefer to drive can easily hop on I-76, which runs alongside of the river down into the city or out west to King of Prussia.

Garbage pick-up happens twice weekly in Conshy, and recycling is picked up once a week. Trash and recycling pick-up is included in the taxes residents pay, so you don’t have to go out of your way to arrange for it. When pick-up occurs depends on which side of the borough you call home.
